Today the 4th graders enjoyed learning about a Honduran Artist, José Antonio Velásquez, and created their own Honduran styled home! First they startec by sketching and blocking in the colors! Then the students added more details to their piece inspired by Velásquez’s Folk-art.
José Antonio Velásquez was a notable Honduran painter, widely recognized for his contributions to the “naïve” or “primitive” art style. Born in 1922, Velásquez became one of the most important figures in the development of this style in Latin America. His works often depicted rural life in Honduras, showcasing everyday scenes with meticulous attention to detail and vivid colors. His art was characterized by its simplicity, clear lines, and a deep connection to his cultural and social environment.
Velásquez’s work has been celebrated for its ability to capture the spirit of his country and the everyday lives of its people. His paintings have been exhibited internationally and are considered an important part of Latin American art history. His influence extended beyond just his home country, as he is regarded as one of the key figures in the naïve art movement.
